Ad561 Scoop Partner · Sugar Hi Boca
Sugar Hi's Mini Black and White Cake, cut open to show layers of vanilla cake, chocolate cake and marshmallow buttercream under half white and half chocolate icing

That is a black and white cookie, rebuilt as a cake. Rosh Hashanah pre-orders just opened.

3011 Yamato Rd A7, Boca Raton · Pickup Sept 10 to 12 · $16 challah to $90 platter

The Mini Black and White Cake stacks vanilla cake, chocolate cake and marshmallow buttercream under that icing and it serves 6 to 10. It sits on the High Holidays menu at SugarHi Boca in Regency Court at Woodfield, next to the round challah, rugelach, chocolate or birthday cake (!!) babka and Shana Tova platters.

Most of the menu needs two days' notice and Wednesday, September 9 is the last day to order for Friday pickup. Pickup runs Thursday 9/10 through Saturday 9/12, pre-orders are final, and the kitchen is nut-free. Their tip, not ours: order two challahs and make French toast the next morning.

Starts Tuesday · Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast

Restaurant Month starts Tuesday: 112 kitchens, one set menu each

SEP 1-30 · BOCA TO PORT ST. LUCIE · SET LUNCHES FROM $25, DINNERS FROM $35

Flavor South Florida runs September 1 through 30, and this year 112 restaurants across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast are putting up fixed-price menus. The Boca list is the one to swipe through: Morton's, Kee Grill, Lynora's, Red Pine, Anyday, Seasons 52, True Food Kitchen and Sushi by Bou are all in. Deals start at $25 for lunch, where lunch is offered, and $35 for dinner, and you pick a first, second, third and sometimes fourth course, so read the actual menu at flavorsouthflorida.com before you book. Flavor says you should be handed the special menu alongside the regular one when you sit down, and if you are not, ask for it. Reservations are recommended.

This Week's Highlights

Hidden Gem · Deerfield Beach

A private themed game room with a fog machine, split six ways, is $12.50 a head

616 SE 10TH ST, DEERFIELD BEACH · $75 WEEKDAYS, $100 WEEKENDS · CLOSED MONDAYS

SkillShotz Gaming rents three private game rooms on SE 10th St in Deerfield Beach. Each seats six and comes with LED lighting, surround sound, voice modulation, a fog machine and a virtual tabletop built into the table, so the map lights up under the minis. A weekday session is $75 for the whole room Tuesday through Friday. Weekends are $100 for either a 2 to 6 afternoon block or a 7 to midnight evening block, and 50-plus board games come with the room. A professional Dungeon Master is a $50 add-on with advance notice. The shop side runs Magic: The Gathering, Star Wars Unlimited, Lorcana and One Piece, and the $50 monthly membership covers up to two sessions a week plus 20 percent off cafe items. You can drop by and play for free with no membership when there is space, and the shop and The Twisted Vine bar stay open to walk-ins during normal hours. Book ahead, because there are only three rooms.

For the Kids · Boynton Beach

There is a new exhibit in Boynton where kids crawl through the mouth of an alligator

129 E OCEAN AVE, BOYNTON BEACH · TUE-SAT 9-4:30 · KIDS $10, ADULTS $8, SENIORS $7

The Schoolhouse Children's Museum puts two floors of hands-on South Florida history in your kid's hands, including a dairy exhibit where they take a turn milking the cow and a general store to run. The new Mangrove Manor exhibit is the draw right now, and the gator you climb into is the photo op every parent leaves with. Kids over 12 months are $10, adults $8, seniors 62 and up $7, and under 12 months free. Reserve a time slot online first, because the museum runs at limited capacity and walk-ins go on a waiting list. The door policy cuts both ways: minors need an adult, and adults are not admitted without a child. There is a weekly class calendar too, and it is closed Sunday and Monday.

Saturday Sep 5 · West Palm Beach

Free blues and smoked barbecue at Heart & Soul Park to open the long weekend

HEART & SOUL PARK, 825 N ROSEMARY AVE, WEST PALM BEACH · SAT SEP 5 · 5-9 PM · FREE ENTRY

BBQ, Brews & Blues takes over Heart & Soul Park in the Historic Northwest from 5 to 9 on Saturday. Admission is free and the whole thing is built for kids too. The city has the Derek Mack Band opening the main stage at 5, then Blues Music Award winner Selwyn Birchwood from 7:30 to 9. Barbecue and craft beer come from local vendors, so bring a card. It anchors our full Labor Day weekend plan, which is live now and takes in a Michelin Bib Gourmand bakery in West Palm and a ten-concept Asian food hall in Deerfield.

Open Late · West Boca

Sushi until midnight on Friday and Saturday out at Shadowood Square

SHADOWOOD SQUARE, 9975 GLADES RD · TUE-THU & SUN 12-10, FRI-SAT 12-MIDNIGHT · CLOSED MON

Nomu Sushi & Pub runs noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10 the rest of the week. The toro tartar is the dish reviewers keep naming, rich enough that the crunchy toppings are doing real work. The room gets called out about as often as the food, a small, dimly lit pub-style space with outdoor seating for the cooler nights. There is a happy hour across drinks, apps and sushi, and the lychee martini is the order regulars point to. Closed Mondays, and prices move, so check the current menu before you go.
