There is a roof over eighteen of the pickleball courts at Patch Reef Park now, with fans turning overhead and lights for after dark, which means the 2pm August sun has stopped being the reason anybody quits early. That complex opened in the fall of 2025 and about 400 people showed up to play on day one. A few hundred yards west, the playground got rebuilt too, and it is fully fenced with a shaded splash pad in the middle of it. Parking is free and there are 535 spots. Walking in costs nothing.

All of that sits on 55 acres at 2000 W Yamato Rd, between St. Andrews and Military Trail, and it is the closest thing Boca has to a plan that works for everybody in the car.

What It's Actually Like

Start with the playground, because it is the reason most families come back. It replaced the old Pirates Cove setup in May 2025 and the whole area is enclosed by a fence, so you can sit down without tracking a toddler across an open field. Slides are mounted on grassy hills instead of ladders, there is a wheelchair-compatible swing, and there are adjustable Bankshot hoops for kids who want to shoot without anyone keeping score. Nearly everything sits under shade structures or trees. The splash pad was redone at the same time with new interactive elements, and it is shaded too, which in South Florida is the difference between an hour outside and ten minutes.

The racquet side is its own operation. The City lists thirteen plexi-cushion tennis courts, fifteen open-air pickleball courts and the eighteen covered ones, which come with bleachers, table seating and water stations. The rest of the park is free and first come, first served: three basketball courts, three baseball fields, three football and soccer fields, outdoor fitness equipment, and the Patch Reef Park Trail looping past open green space for anyone who came to walk rather than compete.

Then there is the cookout side, which is where people get tripped up. There are ten charcoal grills in the park and six pavilions available to rent, each one coming with a grill, two picnic tables and an electrical outlet. Most of the grills live with the pavilions, so if you want one guaranteed, you rent.

The Insider Move

Pavilions cannot be booked online or over the phone. City policy is that you reserve and pay in person, and at Patch Reef that happens at the James A. Rutherford Community Center inside the park, open Monday through Friday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm, closed Sunday. So a weekend cookout has to be locked in before the weekend. Bring proof of residency, because the rate depends on it, and know that fees are due at booking and there are no refunds. You can reserve up to three months out.

For pickleball, check in at the pro shop before you play and bring ID if you want the resident rate. Non-members can reserve a court one day ahead after 1pm, and courts are assigned in 90-minute blocks. Book early if you want a covered one.

Two more things that end trips in the parking lot: pets are not allowed anywhere in Boca parks, and neither is alcohol. Propane is out too, so charcoal only. Skip the balloons and confetti, both are banned citywide.

What People Are Saying

When the covered courts opened, USA Pickleball ambassador Raul Travieso told reporters it would be "the premier venue to play pickleball in South Florida", and roughly 400 people turned up that first evening to test the claim. The playground got a similar reception. Stacey Ogman, whose son Jordan inspired the redesign after her family petitioned District commissioners, watched him go straight into the splash pad on opening day and said he could not have been happier. Parents posting about it since have landed on the same two words over and over: fully enclosed.

Worth Knowing

The park is owned by the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District and run by the City of Boca Raton, which is why the playground and fields stay free while the racquet club charges its own way.
