The Boynton Sports Pub Where Every Wing Is Air-Fried

510 E Ocean Ave, Unit 101 · Happy hour 3-6PM daily · $3 drafts

Rivalries cut the ribbon on E Ocean Ave in downtown Boynton in mid-July, and the entire kitchen runs oil-free. The Lord of the Wings comes air-fried in eight flavors, there is a video arcade in the back mixing old-school cabinets with newer games, and a stage with a rotating lineup of local South Florida bands. Screens run wall to wall with the major sports packages. Happy hour is 3 to 6 every day for $3 drafts and $5 wine, and on Wednesdays a pitcher or bucket gets you a free order of wings. Call ahead and tell them what game you want, and they will put it on a screen for you.

The Walk-In Slime Lab That Saves a Boca Afternoon

5501 N Federal Hwy, Suite 4 · Tue-Sun from 10:30AM · from $17

When the heat hits and the kids are climbing the walls, Slimeology on N Federal Hwy is the move. Every visit is a guided 20 to 30 minute Slime Sesh with a certified Slimeologist, and your kid picks a level, a color, a scent and a pile of add-ins. It runs $17 for a half-dose Mini Mixologist up to $32 for a full-dose Slime Mastermind, and the higher tiers add charms. You can walk in any day they are open, though booking ahead locks your spot for a group. Note the hours: closed Monday, open at 10:30 the rest of the week, and Friday is the only late night at 6:30.

Free Stargazing on the FAU Campus This Friday

Science Bldg 43, 4th Floor, Rm SE-434 · Fri Aug 7, 8PM · Free

The FAU Astronomical Observatory opens its dome to the public twice a month, on first Fridays and third Tuesdays, and the next two are Aug 7 and Aug 18 at 8PM. No ticket, no reservation, no student ID. The whole room runs on red light to protect everyone's night vision, and the dome is open to the outside air, so dress for the actual weather and wear closed shoes for the stairs up to the platform. Here is the part that trips people up: you can park in Lot 4, the lot with the red lines right outside the Observatory, from 6:30PM to 2:30AM on public viewing nights, and the usual permit restriction lifts for visitors. Take the lot entrance just past the Recreation and Fitness Center. Check the observatory events page before you drive over, since a cloudy night can push the session.

This Weekend: Cuban Coffee, All 20 Regions of Italy, and 90 Japanese Ghosts

Boca · Boynton · Delray · Saturday Aug 8

One Saturday, four stops. Morning coffee and a $13.50 Cuban sandwich at Cafe Aroma, the eight-seat cafe at Two Town Center in Boca, open 7:30 to 3 daily. Lunch as a tour of Italy at Antonacci in Boynton, where each pizza maps to one of Italy's twenty regions, from the $24 Campania to the $33 grilled-octopus Sardegna. An afternoon at Morikami in Delray for the yokai show, 90 Japanese ghost prints that come down Aug 30, then the gardens near 4PM when the heat breaks. Then Shaw Davis & the Black Ties at the Funky Biscuit in Boca at 8PM. Time the lunch: Antonacci opens at 11:45 Thursday through Saturday, but not until 3PM on Sunday.

The Boca Brunch Spot With a Smoker Out Back

2151 N Federal Hwy · Daily from 7AM · $$

There is a smoker running behind The Hen and The Hog on N Federal, and by mid-morning the whole corner smells like brisket. They smoke their own brisket, pork, chicken and ribs out back and then put that meat into breakfast, so a Brisket Benedict means you are eating barbecue before 8AM. Order the Shrimp and Grits or the Biscuits and Gravy first. Two things most people miss: go before 9 on a weekend, and they serve dinner Friday through Sunday with live music, which is when the smoked meats really make sense.

Worth Knowing

On Our Radar

POSH Consignment By V
Luxury designer consignment on the NE corner of Federal and Palmetto Park in downtown Boca (40 N Federal Hwy), a few steps from Mizner Park. Handbags, jewelry and accessories from the big houses. Listed hours vary across sites, so call (561) 465-5252 before you go. Worth a slow browse if a designer find at consignment prices is your thing.
Sadman Comedy Cafe
An intimate comedy room at 209 SE 1st Ave in downtown Boca, where you actually hear the punchlines. The Late Night Showcase runs Friday and Saturday, doors at 9 and show at 10, with a two-drink minimum. Small room and tight plaza parking, so grab tickets ahead and give yourself extra time.
Palm Beach Improv
The national-touring comedy club reopens Labor Day weekend at the Mall at Wellington Green, on the upper level near CMX Cinemas. It has been without a permanent home since CityPlace was redeveloped, so this is a real return. Worth putting on the calendar now if you want first pick of the fall lineup.
