You smell it before you see it. There is a smoker running behind the building at 2151 N Federal Hwy, and by mid-morning the whole corner smells like brisket. Which is a strange and wonderful thing to walk into when you came for pancakes.

The Hen and The Hog opens at 7AM every day in Boca, and it is a scratch kitchen in the literal sense. They smoke their own brisket, pork, chicken and ribs out back, then put that meat into your breakfast. Order the Brisket Benedict and you are eating barbecue before 8 in the morning. Almost nothing else in town is doing that.

What You're Getting Into

Start with the Shrimp and Grits, which the menu bills as award winning and which regulars will tell you is the reason to come. It is Southern-style cheesy grits under cajun bronzed shrimp with a lemon garlic beurre blanc and pico de gallo, and the grits alone are worth the trip. The Biscuits and Gravy is the other benchmark, two scratch biscuits split open under country sausage gravy that people describe as having a little Cajun kick to it.

From there the menu goes wide. Chicken and Waffles comes on a Belgian waffle with strawberry butter. The Pig and Waffle swaps in pulled pork and swiss. There is a Pig Pen Omelet loaded with bacon, sausage, ham, pulled pork and chorizo, a brisket skillet built on home fries with queso fresco and roasted red pepper aioli, and Banana Cream Pie Pancakes if you want your breakfast to be dessert. The Fruity Pebble French Toast is the one everybody photographs and it is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds. If you are drinking, they pour beer, wine and cocktails, and the mimosa tower shows up on tables all weekend.

The room is a farmhouse, not a diner. There is a big covered alfresco section out front with an authentic tractor table, the patio is dog-friendly, and people bring theirs. Inside is wood and rustic decor and the sort of place where nobody hurries you through a second cup of coffee.

The Insider Move

Two things most people miss. First, go before 9AM on a weekend. Saturday and Sunday get slammed and waits can stretch long, but the 7 to 9 window is calm and you get your pick of the patio. Second, and this is the real one: they serve dinner Friday through Sunday with live music, and hardly anybody thinks of this place as a dinner spot. That is when the smoked meats really make sense. Parking is free on the side and rear of the building, so you are not circling N Federal. For dinner or a bigger group, call ahead at (561) 466-9266, since reservations are handled by phone.

What People Are Saying

Locals are consistent about two things: the from-scratch cooking and the service. One reviewer who went hunting for a breakfast spot with a patio, parking and real food landed here and stayed, noting that the smoker out back is what sold them. Others single out the cheesy grits as the best they have had, the brisket dishes across the board, and servers by name, which is usually a good sign. The Boca location has stacked up over 600 Yelp reviews and sits around 4.7 on Google.

The one recurring gripe is the wait on weekend mornings, which is exactly why the early window matters.
