There are enough casual seafood spots, wine bars, and overpriced brunch joints on Atlantic Avenue. What Delray has been missing - genuinely missing - is a place that takes smoke seriously. Tropical Smokehouse fills that gap, and then some.
It opened on West Atlantic Avenue in January 2026, and the concept is simple to describe but hard to find anywhere in the 561: Florida-style slow-smoked BBQ with a Caribbean twist. Jerk chicken next to smoked brisket. Ribs with Caribbean spices. A crispy shrimp burger that's only available at this location. The combination sounds like a lot, but it works in a way that feels genuinely native to South Florida - not like a Texas BBQ chain dropped down here, and not like a Caribbean restaurant awkwardly trying to add BBQ to the menu.
What to Order
The jerk chicken is the move if you've never been. Slow-smoked and finished with Caribbean spice - the kind of thing that's hard to get right because it requires actual time and technique, not just a sauce. It's the dish that makes this place feel different from every other BBQ spot in the area.
The brisket is proper. Sliced thick, smoke ring visible, tender enough to pull apart. If you've had decent Texas brisket, you know what to look for. This one holds up.
The crispy shrimp burger is a Delray-only menu item - not available at their other location. Worth ordering for that reason alone. Shrimp on a burger sounds gimmicky until you actually eat it.
Mac and cheese. Order it. Just order it.
For lighter options, the sesame chop salad is a legit lunch move, and the bowls let you mix and match proteins over a base without committing to a full plate of smoked meat at noon.
The Happy Hour Play
Happy hour runs daily from 4:30 to 6:30pm: half off snacks and 25% off house drinks. On a Friday, this is genuinely one of the better early evening moves on Atlantic. Show up at 4:30, grab a seat before it fills up, order the jerk chicken and a couple snacks, and you've got a real dinner for a fraction of the normal cost. The crowd at that window tends to be locals who know - not the tourist wave that hits later.

The Move
Go on a Friday and hit the happy hour window. Park on the side streets off Atlantic - the main street parking fills up fast on weekends. Come hungry enough for a full smoked plate, but if you're just doing snacks and drinks at the bar, that works too. The interior is casual - this is not a dressed-up scene, it's a BBQ spot that takes its food seriously and doesn't make you feel like you're paying for the vibe.
Delray needed a place like this. Go see what the fuss is about.
