There is an art exhibit sitting inside the Boca Raton Downtown Library right now that changes depending on where you stand, and it comes down Monday, August 24. It has been up since July 20 and almost nobody has mentioned it. It costs nothing. There is no ticket, no reservation and no timed entry. You walk into a public library on NW 2nd Avenue, you look at it, and you leave. The artist has shown in Tokyo, Switzerland and Taiwan, and this week his work is in a room you can park next to.

What You're Getting Into

The show is called “Touch of Gold,” and it is by Austin Lubetkin, a multidisciplinary artist who works in digital collage, traditional painting and emerging technology. The city describes the exhibit as built around transformation, treating it as a metaphor for value, memory, desire and perception, with holographic components and bold color carrying those ideas.

Strip the gallery language off that and here is the practical version: some of these pieces are not designed to be looked at from one spot. Lubetkin says his works move between spectral multiplicity and golden stillness, which is a poetic way of saying the surface does one thing when you are standing still and a different thing when you move. That is why we are not running a photo of the work at the top of this post. A still image of a holographic piece is a still image of half the piece.

It also makes this an unusually easy show to bring a kid to, or to bring the friend who says they do not like galleries. There is no wall text to decode and no art history prerequisite. The only instruction is move your feet and watch what happens. The compositions themselves are bold and graphic, so the shapes land immediately even if the shimmer takes a second pass.

Why It Looks Like That

This is the part that turns a library exhibit into something you forward to someone. Lubetkin is autistic and has synesthesia, the crossing of one sense into another, where sound or emotion arrives as color. The city's release explains that the bright, layered quality of his pieces is how he translates sensory and emotional states into something visible. So the loudness of the color is not a style choice laid on top of the work. It is closer to a transcript.

He connects that directly to art therapy, which he says “played a formative role in helping me become the adult I am today.” He has said much of his work addresses social issues through what he calls a psychedelic lens, and that advocacy sits at the center of what he does, in his own art and in the shows he curates.

The Insider Move

Go on a weekday. The library runs 9 AM to 8 PM Monday through Thursday, which is the only window that gives you an after-work option, and it drops to 9 AM to 5 PM Friday through Sunday. The last day, Monday, August 24, is a Monday, so you get until 8 PM that night and not a minute past it.

When you are in front of the holographic pieces, do not stand square to them. Step to one side and then the other and watch the surface change. That side-to-side pass is the whole reason to see this in person instead of on a screen, and it is the thing most people walking through a library lobby will not think to do.

Is It Actually Worth the Drive

A library exhibit does not come with a star rating, so judge it on the artist. Lubetkin was awarded Best Digital Art in the LA Open. He has presented a solo exhibition in Los Angeles and shown internationally in Tokyo, Switzerland and Taiwan. TAG Gallery in Los Angeles, which hosted him earlier this year, describes him as a visual artist and software engineer whose work is shaped by autism and synesthesia.

Closer to home, he has presented solo and group shows at the Boynton Beach Arts and Culture Center, and he currently curates a Florida show highlighting artists with disabilities. That is the detail that reframes this for us. This is not a visiting name passing through on a tour. He works here.
