Everything at KYU comes off a wood fire, and you taste it from the first bite. The Beef Short Rib lands at the table glossed in sweet soy and black shichimi pepper, smoke worked all the way through, and it is built to pull apart and share. KYU sits at 251 NW 25th St in the middle of Wynwood, it is a MICHELIN Guide restaurant, and it is the kind of meal you plan a whole day around.

It is about 45 miles south of Boca, close to an hour each way once I-95 does its thing. That is far enough that you do not drive down just for dinner. You make a Wynwood day of it, and the meal is the anchor.

What You're Getting Into

KYU is wood-fired, Asian-inspired cooking served family style, and the grill is the whole personality of the place. The Beef Short Rib is the one everyone reaches for first, glazed in sweet soy and black shichimi pepper, cut to share and easily enough for the table. The Roasted Cauliflower is the sleeper, a whole head roasted over the fire with goat cheese and a shishito-herb vinaigrette, and it routinely outshines the meat. You will fight over the last piece.

The Korean Fried Chicken with chili butter and braised spinach and the crispy Baby Back Ribs in yakiniku glaze round out a solid order. Everything comes out as it is ready and is meant to be passed around, so go with people who share. A full dinner with cocktails lands near $150 to $200 a person once the automatic 20% service charge is in.

The room matches the food, warm wood, dark leather, and an open kitchen with the fire going. Order the Short Rib and the Roasted Cauliflower first and build the rest of the meal around them. That is the move that tells you what this kitchen does.

The Insider Move

Make it a full Wynwood day so the drive earns its keep. Reserve KYU ahead because it books up, and grab an early table so you still have daylight afterward. Start with a coffee at Panther Coffee, then walk Wynwood Walls, the original outdoor street-art museum, with murals spread across six warehouse buildings (there is an admission fee now, so check before you go). The whole district is walkable and full of galleries, shops, and bars, so park once and explore on foot. One small thing to know going in: KYU adds 20% to the check automatically, so you do not need to do the math at the end.

A Little Background

KYU helped put Wynwood on the map as a dining destination, and it is one of a handful of spots in the neighborhood the MICHELIN Guide recognizes. The draw is simple. Nearly everything runs through that wood fire, from the short rib to the cauliflower, and that is the whole idea. It is why people keep driving in for it.
