There’s a small family-owned bakery in Pompano Beach that has built a steady following and lines out the door, and most people in Boca still haven’t made the drive. Macamochi makes its Dubai chocolate, French macarons, and mochi fresh every day, and people keep tagging friends and asking for the address. About 15 minutes south of Boca, it is the kind of spot you visit once and then keep finding reasons to go back to.
Macamochi sits at 167 SW 6th Street in Pompano Beach. If you have never made the trip to Pompano for dessert, this is your reason to start.
What You’re Getting Into
The Dubai chocolate is one of their headliners, and it has the components of the original: a filling of pistachio cream, tahini, and crunchy kataifi (the shredded pastry that gives it that signature crackle) wrapped in Belgian chocolate. The London Strawberry cup, which they call their Viral London Strawberry, layers fresh local strawberries with that same pistachio crunch and melted Belgian chocolate. If you want to build your own at home, they sell an 8oz Crunchy Dubai Dip.
The macarons are the everyday specialty, and they are 100% gluten-free almond cookies made fresh with minimum sugar, so the flavors actually come through instead of getting buried in sweetness. The pistachio is the one to start with at $5.50, and a box of nine runs $42 if you are bringing them somewhere. There is even a Dubai macaron that combines both of their best sellers, with almond shells and a pistachio, tahini, and kataifi filling.
The mochi is made from scratch and is worth understanding before you order. This is not the grocery-store ice cream kind. It is a low-sugar, gluten-free Japanese-style mochi with a soft, creamy center and a chewy rice flour dough outside, closer to biting a cloud than a frozen dessert. A box of four is $19.99, and a couple of the varieties contain nuts, so ask if that matters for you. Coffee, matcha, and croissants round out the menu.
The Insider Move
Refrigerate your order for about 30 minutes before you eat it. The Dubai chocolate especially: cold from the fridge, the shell cracks exactly the way it should and the pistachio filling sets into a firmer, richer texture. Ask for a cold bag if you are taking things to go. One more thing most people miss: Macamochi is closed on Tuesdays, and the weekends close earlier at 5pm, so a weekday visit gives you the widest selection and the least rush.
What People Are Saying
Macamochi has grown a following of roughly 12,000 on Instagram, and the recurring theme from regulars is some version of “worth the drive,” with people coming from Boca, Fort Lauderdale, and Coral Springs for a bakery that makes everything in-house and keeps the sugar low.
