West of the Boca most people know, the strip malls give way to a raised wooden boardwalk that runs straight out over a real swamp. Turtles sun themselves on the logs, butterflies drift through the trees, and if you look up you might catch an osprey working the water. This is Daggerwing Nature Center, and despite being completely free, it’s a place most Boca locals have never actually set foot in.

It sits inside Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park in west Boca, and it’s built for exactly the kind of summer day when the beach is too hot by noon and you need a plan that works for kids.

What You’re Getting Into

There are two halves to a visit. Inside, the air-conditioned 3,000 square foot exhibit hall is packed with live Florida animals, alligators, turtles, snakes, and a screech owl among them, plus hands-on displays and a short nature film. It’s the kind of close-up encounter that keeps a six-year-old genuinely interested. Staff often do a short animal feeding talk with one of the resident animals, so ask at the front desk when you arrive to see if one lines up with your visit.

Outside, a 6/10-mile boardwalk loops through 40 acres of swamp, shaded enough that you can do it even in June without melting. The trail splits into two paths where you can spot ospreys, woodpeckers, butterflies, and the center’s namesake, the ruddy daggerwing. There’s a three-story observation tower for a full view out over the canopy, and a butterfly garden near the entrance that hosts up to 17 species.

It’s the rare South Florida outing that costs nothing, teaches kids something real, and doesn’t involve a gift shop checkout line. Bring binoculars if you have them, since the bird activity along the boardwalk is the quiet highlight.

The Insider Move

In summer, split the difference on timing. The boardwalk opens at sunrise, so do the outdoor loop early while it’s still cool, then head into the exhibit hall when it opens, 1pm Wednesday through Friday or 10am on Saturday. Bring water and bug spray, it’s a wetland and the mosquitoes know it. The center is closed Sunday through Tuesday, so build your visit around the back half of the week. One heads-up for summer 2026: the park has crosswalk and signage work underway through July 10, so leave a few extra minutes for traffic and parking.
