You have driven past it a thousand times. The Wick Theatre sits up on North Federal Highway looking like a place you go once a year when someone gets you tickets to a musical. What most of Boca never knew is that there is a dining room inside it, and until the end of July you were not allowed to book a table unless you had a ticket to a show or an event.

That rule is gone. The Tavern at The Wick is now open to anyone, and it serves exactly three nights a week.

What it’s actually like

The room was built to echo Tavern on the Green in Manhattan, which tells you the register: intimate, warm, a little theatrical, the kind of place where the lighting does half the work. What makes it genuinely strange in the best way is where it sits. The Wick is not only a theatre, it is a museum club, and it holds the largest collection of Broadway attire in the country. So you are having dinner a few steps from racks of real costumes from real productions. It is a dining room with a backstage.

The kitchen is seasonal and leans on local sourcing. Right now that means a watermelon gazpacho to start, which is about as correct as an opener gets in a Florida August. From there it goes classic and a little old-school in a way that fits the room. There is veal scallopini in a wild mushroom cream sauce. And there is a chateaubriand bouquetier that comes out and gets carved at your table, which is the dish to order if you are bringing someone you are trying to impress. Tableside service is not something Boca has a lot of anymore.

On top of the regular menu, The Tavern runs themed nights with their own curated dishes and entertainment. Worth watching their calendar if you want the fuller version of the evening.

The insider move

Book early in the window and give yourself time before your table. You are inside a museum, and now that you do not need a show ticket to be in the building, the collection is the part most people will walk right past on their way to dinner. Do not be most people. Then sit down and let them carve the chateaubriand.

Why you should not wait

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 4:30 to 9 p.m. That is the whole window. It is a small, intimate room that spent years serving only theatre guests and has been open to the general public for about a week. The math on that is not complicated.
