If you've been waiting for a bakery in Boca Raton that actually lives up to the hype, this is the one. Black Star Bakery & Cafe - a NYC cult favorite - will open its first location outside of New York right here at Royal Palm Place. And yes, it's as good as the city people have been saying it is.
What Makes Black Star Different
Black Star isn't a chain doing volume. It's a bakery that built a reputation in New York City on the quality of its laminated pastries, its serious coffee program, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. The croissants have been talked about in food circles for years. The kouign-amann - a caramelized, buttery Breton pastry that's crispy on the outside and soft in the center - is the kind of thing people drive across neighborhoods for in the city.
Boca will now have the same thing.
What to Order
Here's where to start:
The kouign-amann - caramelized, buttery, and worth arriving early for. This sells out.
The morning bun - orange zest, cinnamon sugar, flaky layers. The kind of pastry you eat in the car and don't feel bad about.
The croissants - laminated properly, with that audible crunch when the shell breaks. Classic, but done right.
The coffee - this is a serious espresso program. The drinks match the pastries.
Regulars in NYC say the laminated pastries are the standout category. Order one of those first, then go from there.
The Insider Tip
Skip weekends for your first visit. A Tuesday or Wednesday morning gets you the full selection before things start selling out, and you'll actually have time to enjoy the space. This is what the regulars at NYC does.
This will be there only location outside of New York. Save them in your future to-go list.
