There is a wall of glass at 2032 N Dixie Hwy in West Palm Beach, and on the other side of it, a room full of cats is watching you order your coffee. That is Nine Lives Cafe, and it is not a gimmick. It runs as a nonprofit whose stated mission is to "combat euthanasia and promote the adoption of cats."

The coffee up front helps pay for the cats in back. And the cats in back can come home with you.

What You're Getting Into

The space splits in two. The front is a working cafe with calm, neutral tones and seating for about 25, where you order coffee, pastries, and small bites at the counter like anywhere else, with a full view of the cat room through the glass. There are gluten-free options if you need them. The back is Cat Heaven, a free-roam room of adoption-ready rescue cats that you book a visit into. You reserve a slot, walk in, sit down, and let the residents make the first move. You can bring your coffee in with you.

Here is what makes it different from every other cute cafe in the county: the whole thing is a rescue operation, run in collaboration with a local adoption center. Every cat in that room is available for adoption right there, so a visit that starts as a coffee break can end with adoption paperwork. While you are there you can pick up cat toys, treats, and Nine Lives merch, and if you find yourself going back often, there is a membership that waives the Cat Heaven admission fee.

Then there is Paw-lates. It is a real, bookable 60-minute mat Pilates class led by the cafe's CEO, taken on the floor of the cat room while the resident cats wander through. They run therapeutic cat yoga sessions too, and they host events on top of both. A Pilates class. In a cat room. This is not a drill.

It is also just a genuinely calm place to sit. The whole concept is built around the therapeutic side of being around cats, and it is family-friendly, though kids need to be supervised while they are in with the residents.
