On Saturday, October 3, the Norton Museum of Art drops its $18 ticket to zero for everyone, and it throws a party while it's at it. Nuestra Cultura, the Norton's free Hispanic Heritage Month festival, runs from 11 AM to 4 PM with a live salsa band in the Great Hall, a mariachi set in the garden, and pull-string piñatas for the kids.

On any other Saturday, the free admission perk is for West Palm residents with ID. This one is open to all of us, including everyone driving up from Boca. And if your Saturday is already booked, there's a $10 Friday-night backup plan further down.

What Saturday Actually Looks Like

The music starts at 11 with David Lucca y Los Clásicos, a band that plays 70s big-band salsa made for dancing. At 12:30 there's a dance class covering the basics of bachata, merengue, and salsa, and you don't need a partner or any experience. Plena Es brings Puerto Rican bomba and plena drumming to the Great Hall at 2, and Mariachi Pancho Villa plays the garden at 3.

The garden is where the kids will want to be. DJ Rumble starts spinning at noon, and the piñata parties happen at 1:30 and 3:45. They're pull-string piñatas, so there are no sticks, just ribbons and candy. Inside, there's bilingual storytime in English and Spanish at 12:15, 1:45, and 3:15. The Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Palm Beach County teaches dominoes all day, and there's an open studio art project running too.

For food, The Restaurant at the Norton is making fresh empanadas inspired by different Latin cultures, served alongside Latin American beers and specialty cocktails. If you need a quieter hour, the Stiller Auditorium screens TheyDream at noon. It's a 2026 film by William D. Caballero in which he and his mother use handmade animation to bring lost family members back to life.

What's On the Walls (One Closes Sunday)

The timing on the galleries matters. Danielle Mckinney: Shelter, the largest museum exhibition of her career so far, closes Sunday, October 4. Her paintings catch women in quiet, private moments, with figures emerging from dark backgrounds. This is the last weekend to see them.

• Cursed Images: Pictures Out of Context, through November 1

Cursed Images is the one you'll be describing to friends later. It's a collection of anonymous 20th-century snapshots, each chosen because something in it feels slightly, inexplicably off.

Free spotlight tours leave the Maurer Lobby at 11:30, 12:45, and 1:45. There's also a 30-minute express tour in Spanish and English at noon, and an hour-long collection highlights tour in both languages at 2:30. Save a few minutes for the sculpture garden too, where works by Keith Haring, Antony Gormley, and Jenny Holzer sit in a lush subtropical landscape.

The Insider Move

Parking is the one thing to plan. The Norton's visitor lot across the street is free during the festival, but the museum says spaces are limited and asks people to carpool. When it fills, there's free overflow parking at the Family Church lot, and the Norton posts an overflow map on the event page. You can also skip the car entirely: Brightline runs from Boca to West Palm, and Circuit, the free downtown shuttle, will get you to the museum.

One more trick: October 3 and 4 is the first full weekend of the month, which is when Bank of America's Museums on Us program gets cardholders in free. If Saturday feels too packed, a BofA card gets you in on Sunday for Mckinney's final day.

The Buzz

Last year's Nuestra Cultura made the local news, with coverage of bands playing music from Guatemala, Mexico, and Cuba, dominoes lessons, a bachata, merengue, and salsa class, and a pull-string piñata party for the kids. This year keeps the mariachi, the dominoes, and the piñatas, and adds a salsa big band and a DJ in the garden. The Norton's own parking warning tells you everything about turnout, so plan to arrive early.

Can't Do Saturday? Go Friday Night

Every Friday, the Norton stays open until 10 PM for Art After Dark. Admission is $10 for adults and seniors, $5 for students, and free for members. Docent tours run at 5:30 and 7, and there's a drop-in open studio from 6 to 9 with all materials included. The program lists Jazz Friday on the first Friday of each month at 7, so check the Norton's calendar for that night's lineup before you go.

Friday-night parking is $3 an hour at the lot across the street, with a three-hour max, valid until 10. The Restaurant at the Norton looks out over the sculpture garden and takes reservations on Tock, which makes the whole night an easy date plan.
